Will this be the first non-English-language film to win Best Drama Series? The gory Korean series “The Squid Game” will have tough competition on Monday at the Emmy Awards, where it has a chance to make history, AFP reports.

A dark and brutal condemnation of the excesses of capitalism, where poor people kill each other in cruel children’s games in the hope of making millions, Netflix’s worldwide success could be the pinnacle of this competition, the equivalent of the Oscars for American television.

A success that would follow in the footsteps of Korean film Parasite, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2020.

But to win in Los Angeles, the series will have to beat a serious rival: “The Legacy,” a production that already won an award two years ago for chronicling a powerful family whose members plot and destroy each other.

“It’s pretty hard to compete with that giant HBO,” says Pete Hammond, Deadline’s film reviewer.

The Shakespeare-tinged series leads the way with 25 nominations and remains the favorite, according to experts polled by specialist website Gold Derby.

However, Hammond is betting on “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae to win the best actor award. The South Korean would thus become the first recipient of the award for a performance in a non-English language.

The Korean drama already won four awards in minor categories at the Creative Emmys in early September, including best performance in a series for actress Lee Yoo Mi.

“Disruptive Aid” (Apple TV+), a disturbing metaphor for the world of work, and “Ozark” (Netflix), which explores money laundering and the vices of the American middle class, are also up for best drama.

Zendaya, who already won in 2020, has a chance to win best actress again for her role as a drug-addicted teen in Euphoria.
