Pfizer: invests $1.2 billion in the city of Purs, Belgium

The American pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced today its intention to invest 1.2 billion euros in the city of Pur, Belgium, over the next three years.

This is the largest investment ever made in the plant, which currently employs 4,500 people and is one of the largest plants of the American giant in the world, according to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir.

The Pfizer plant in Paris rose to global prominence around the end of 2020, when an American company selected it to produce an mRNA vaccine against Covid-19 (Comirnaty) developed in collaboration with BioNTech.

According to Le Soir, the Pour plant covers an area of more than 100 hectares and specializes in the production and packaging of sterile injectables and vaccines in the form of vials, ampoules or syringes.

An investment of 1.2 billion euros will be used to expand all stages of production. These investments are expected to create 250 additional jobs in the pharmaceutical industry.

Employment in Porto has already increased significantly since the production of the Covid vaccine. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of employees has increased from 2,800 to 4,500 people.
