Russia summoned Belgium’s ambassador to Moscow on Tuesday to protest the alleged use of Belgian weapons by Russians fighting alongside Ukraine in several recent incursions into Russian territory, AFP reported.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the ambassador was sent “a strong protest in connection with the exposure of the use of Belgian-made weapons by subversive groups that carried out terrorist attacks in the Belgorod region.”

“Russia has repeatedly warned about the danger of supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces with Western weapons and equipment and their uncontrolled spread,” he added.

Moscow asked Belgium “not to turn a blind eye to the growing evidence of Kyiv’s support” for these armed groups that “attack civilians and civilian infrastructure in Russia.”

These incursions, claimed by armed groups calling themselves Russian and fighting alongside the Ukrainian army, have led to violent clashes in Russia’s Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine.

They were accompanied by massive bombings of Russian cities and villages, which led to the death of several civilians and injuries to dozens of people. Moscow used aviation and artillery to repel these armed groups.

On Monday, the Belgian government said it would ask Kyiv for “clarification” regarding reports of the use of Belgian-made weapons during these incursions into Russia.

Belgium, like other European countries and the United States, provided weapons to Ukraine on the condition that they would not be used for strikes on Russian territory due to fears of an escalation of the conflict.

According to the American newspaper Washington Post, pro-Russian militants in Belgorod used military equipment supplied to Kyiv by the USA and Poland, as well as Belgian and Czech-made rifles.

Ukraine denies that it directed these attacks on Russian territory.
