her manager CIA William Burns visited last month China to negotiate with their counterparts, a US official said today, as President Joe Biden’s administration seeks to promote dialogue with Beijing.
“Director Burns traveled to Beijing last month where he met with his Chinese counterparts and stressed the importance of maintaining open channels of communication within the intelligence agencies,” the official said.
The visit was reported by the Financial Times. The US administration has insisted that lines of communication be kept open and meetings are scheduled between officials from the two sides in a tense atmosphere.
The Burns mission took place the same month that US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met in Vienna with Wang Yi, a senior Chinese foreign policy official.
Burns’ trip also marked the highest-level visit by a US official to China since Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman visited Tianjin in July 2021.
Biden repeatedly asked the director of the CIA to carry out secret missions both at home and abroad. Burns traveled to Moscow in November 2021 to warn Russian officials against invading Ukraine.
