For several years, there has been a debate about the right of the elderly to drive. On the one hand, some believe that a review should be introduced for monitoring health and vigilance the latter from a certain age. Others consider it discrimination. All the more so for those who do not have a family and who cannot but drive a car to go shopping and maintain social life. So far, no decision has been taken by the government, which seems unwilling to work on the subject.

An unlikely event
But some cases prove that driving after a certain age can become dangerous for everyone. That’s exactly what comes out of a story that hit the headlines over the Pentecost weekend. This Monday, everything is calm in the center of Rodez, located in Aveyron. Suddenly a freak accident happens. A car without a license falls down the rue Francois Mahou and ends its journey on a staircase between two low walls. But how is this possible? 90-year-old driver was actually unable to stop his car from accelerating up the hill.
More fear than harm
It got out of control and ended up on the roof at the end of the sloping street. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but the road was free and without pedestrians crossing. Otherwise, the result could have been much more dramatic. There was a passenger taken to the hospital due to pain in the leg, but the state of health of the two passengers of the car is not a cause for concern. That’s why there’s more fear than harm in this amazing story, relayed by our colleagues at France 3 Occitanie.
