His Orthodox Church Ukrainian announced today that she has decided to change her calendar and celebrate Christmas on December 25, which is distancing herself from Russia.
Ukrainian Christians, most of whom are Orthodox, traditionally celebrate Christmas on January 7, along with other predominantly Orthodox countries such as Russia, which invaded Ukraine last year.
“This issue has arisen with new force as a result of Russian aggression,” the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) wrote in a Facebook post announcing the transition from the Julian calendar.
“Currently, the Julian calendar is perceived as belonging to the culture of the Russian Church,” the statement said.
A similar statement was made in February by the main Catholic Church in Ukraine, followed by every tenth Ukrainian believer.
