The intention to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus is a response to the expansion of NATO, the Kremlin said on Thursday, as quoted by the EFE agency.

“The alliance is expanding to the Russian border, this is not Russia approaching NATO,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmytro Peskov said in response to questions about Moscow’s plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

Therefore, the official added, Russia is taking measures to ensure its security.

Earlier on Wednesday, Peskov noted that Moscow will take measures to rebalance the security system after Finland joins NATO.

At the same time, he added that Russia’s response will not necessarily be immediate, as this is a process that requires “a certain amount of time.”

According to the Kremlin, the expansion of the Atlantic alliance threatens the security and interests of Russia.

For his part, the President of Belarus, Oleksandr Lukashenko, in his recent speech before the parliament, did not rule out an appeal to Russia for the deployment of strategic nuclear weapons.

According to Lukashenka, “rascals” from abroad “should understand this” and not try to destabilize the situation.

“We will stop at nothing to protect our countries and peoples,” he added, referring to Russia and Belarus. (Agerpress)
