US Chief of Staff General Mark Milley warned on Wednesday that a war between the United States and another major power would lead to an “extraordinary” use of ammunition and that the country must ensure it is prepared, AFP reports.

Ukraine and Russia have used massive amounts of artillery munitions since Moscow invaded its neighbor in February 2022, raising concerns about stockpiles held by the US, which in turn supplied much of the munitions to Kyiv.

The “unbelievable level of ammunition consumption” is a “big lesson” from the conflict in Ukraine, which remains a “limited regional war”, General Mark Milley said.

“If there was a war or a power struggle between the US and Russia on the Korean peninsula, this consumption would be extraordinary,” he added.

“We still have work to do to make sure our stockpile (…) is ready” to handle any situation, Mark Milley said.

A senior Pentagon official, Gabe Camarillo, said the day before that the United States is investing in the production of more artillery ammunition.

Camarillo said the country is looking to produce more 155mm ammunition, Javelin launchers and missiles, as well as munitions for the Himars precision-guided missile systems.
