Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Monday, CNN reports, that Ukraine has received its first British main battle tanks (Mbt), as well as other Western-made armored vehicles.
“Today I had the honor to test our newest acquisition of armored units together with Airborne Forces Commander Major General Maxim “Mike” Myrgorodskyi and our paratroopers,” Reznikov wrote on Facebook.
He stated that they received Challengers (main battle tanks) from Britain, Strykers (infantry fighting vehicles) and Cougars (mine-resistant mobile infantry fighting vehicles) from the US and Marders (infantry fighting vehicles) from Germany.
Reznikov then thanked Ukrainian allies for their constant support.
“Just a year ago, no one could have thought that the support of our partners would be so strong. That the entire civilized world will reboot and finally resist the bloody aggressor, the terrorist country of Russia,” he said.
“Everything has changed this year. Ukraine changed the world. The resilience of the Ukrainian people and the prowess of our army have convinced everyone that Ukraine will win,” said the Ukrainian government official.
He added that “the new equipment will be a good company for its “brothers” on the battlefield.”
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany has also delivered German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, which are badly needed.
“Yes, we have delivered the Leopard tanks as we announced,” Scholz said during a joint news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in Rotterdam on Monday.
Earlier, Germany promised Ukraine 18 Leopard 2 tanks. Modern tanks are known for their speed and fuel economy.
“Germany and the Netherlands have jointly supplied howitzers and ammunition and are now preparing to supply Leopard 1 main battle tanks with Denmark to support Ukraine,” Scholz said, adding that Germany had “just supplied” “very modern” tanks because it’s good.”
The arrival of the Leopard 2 tanks came after months of debate. German officials have been hesitant to send tanks to Ukraine, saying they are waiting for the U.S. to send its own M1 Abrams to Kyiv.
