Russia failed on Monday to get the UN Security Council to demand an independent investigation into the September explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which connects Russia and Germany, Reuters reports.
Only Russia, China and Brazil voted for the Russian draft resolution, while the remaining 12 Council members abstained. The resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from Russia, China, France, the United States or Britain to pass.
Moscow may demand compensation for Nord Stream gas pipelines
Moscow may seek compensation for damages caused to the Nord Stream gas pipeline after two explosions last September, but the future of the projects is unclear, according to a Russian diplomat quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency, Reuters writes.
Pipelines connecting Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea were disrupted by explosions that Moscow called an act of international terrorism.
“We do not rule out that the issue of compensation for damages due to the explosion will arise later,” said the head of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Biritsevskyi.
He did not say from whom Russia would seek damages.
The combined capacity of both pipelines was 110 billion cubic meters per year, which is more than the 101 billion cubic meters that Russia exported outside the former Soviet Union in 2022.
Biricheski said the future of the pipelines is unclear.
“At the moment, it is very difficult to talk about the future of the Nord Stream gas pipeline system. In general, according to experts, damaged threads can be restored,” he said.
