An explosion occurred at a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, raising fears that there would be many casualties, a police official said.
The explosion took place in a mosque where a large number of people had gathered for prayer, police officer Sikandar Khan told Reuters.
“Part of the building has collapsed and there are supposedly several people under it,” Khan added.
According to the Pakistani news agency Geo News, the explosion occurred inside the mosque during a prayer by a suicide bomber. The same information reports 17 dead so far.
Mohammad Asim, a spokesman for the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, said 83 of the wounded, some of whom are in critical condition, have been treated.
A photo released to local media shows people gathering around the mosque’s collapsed wall.
