Russia: insists on ‘dirty bomb’ warnings

Kremlin announced today that it will continue to warn the international community that Ukraine intends to use a “dirty bomb”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow wants a tough response from the international community.

In this direction, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu today discussed this issue with his counterparts in China and India following telephone conversations with NATO defense ministers.

Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe and Shoigu “discussed the situation in Ukraine,” while the Russian minister “expressed his concern to his Chinese counterpart about possible provocations by Ukraine using a dirty bomb,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.

For his part, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh told Shoigu that none of the parties to the conflict in Ukraine should use nuclear weapons, the Indian government said in a statement.

“The prospect of using radioactive or nuclear weapons is contrary to the basic principles of humanity,” Singh stressed, while reaffirming the need to resolve the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Ukraine and the West have dismissed Moscow’s claims, made in recent days by several Russian officials, that Kyiv is preparing to use a “dirty bomb,” that is, conventional explosives laced with radioactive material.

The issue was discussed yesterday Tuesday in the UN Security Council on the initiative of Moscow.
