According to the Danish police, an Iranian armed with a knife was detained at the Iranian embassy in Copenhagen.
Tehran claims the suspect’s target was the country’s ambassador and criticizes the police’s belated intervention.
The knife-wielding attacker “entered the embassy, spread terror (…) and damaged cars in the parking lot,” Ambassador Asfane Nadipour said in a statement.
According to the police in Copenhagen, this is a 32-year-old Iranian who “penetrated the premises of the embassy with a knife in his hands.” An embassy official saw him before he could reach the building.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the Danish authorities for saying it was too late to intervene. “It is sad that in the heart of Europe there was such an attack on a woman and an ambassador with diplomatic immunity, and the police did not arrive on the spot in time,” he said. According to the Al-Alam TV channel, the ministry summoned the Danish ambassador to Tehran to present a note of protest.
The suspect will appear in court tomorrow. The police said they “took the necessary security measures” for the embassy and its staff after the incident.
