At least six people have been killed and 16 others injured in Russian shelling of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, Oleg Sinegubov, the region’s governor, said.
After the terrorist attack in the Saltovsky district, a fire broke out in an apartment building.
“This is an insidious and cynical attack on civilians that has absolutely no justification and demonstrates the weakness of the attackers,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Telegram message, adding: “We cannot forgive, we will retaliate!”
Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, about 40 kilometers from the Russian border, has come under heavy shelling from the Russian military since the February 24 invasion, but Moscow forces have failed to capture the city.
Hundreds of civilians have died in the region since the start of the war, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Currently, the Russian military has concentrated its operations in the east and south of Ukraine.
UN Secretary General in Lviv
UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in the Ukrainian city of Lvov on the eve of a trilateral meeting with the presidents of Ukraine and Turkey.
Via Twitter, the UN announced Guterres’ arrival in Lviv, saying a trilateral meeting with Zelensky and Erdogan is scheduled for 12 noon Thursday.
According to the Turkish presidency, the prospect of finding a diplomatic solution to end the war between Ukraine and Russia will be discussed.
Grain exports from Ukrainian ports, which have resumed under a recent UN-brokered deal, are also expected to be a major problem. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday that Guterres would discuss with Zelensky, including the issue of security at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
On Friday, the UN Secretary General will travel to Odessa, and on Saturday he will travel to Istanbul, where he will visit the Joint Coordination Center, which includes officials from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN, which controls grain and fertilizer exports.
