Carlo Calenda, leader of the Italian center party Azione (Action), announced on the Italian public television program Rai today, Sunday, that he will cancel an electoral agreement with the centre-left Democratic Party (DP) of former Prime Minister Enrico Letta.
Calenda explained that his move was due to the “democrats” deciding to ally with forces such as the Italian left, which are clearly opposed to the “agenda” of the Draghi government.
At this point, Azione gallops to 6% of the vote, and an electoral alliance can finally be negotiated with the small centrist Living Italy party of former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
“There was such an opportunity to cooperate with the Democratic Party, but their secretary Enrico Lepta made a different choice. I apologize to the Italians,” Kalenda said to Rai.
Under the new conditions, the Democratic Party (DP), the Italian Left, the Greens and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as the former “five-star” Luigi Di Maio, remain in the progressive alliance.
