Marco Raduano, the 40-year-old boss of the Gargano mafia from the Apulia region of southern Italy, was caught on Thursday in front of a luxury restaurant in Bastia, Corsica, where he was sitting at a table with a woman, the News reported. ro.

He was caught by the same anti-mafia unit that captured Matteo Messina Denaro, another gang leader who had been on the run for nearly three decades.

Europol included Raduano in the top ten most dangerous fugitives.

Also detained was his right-hand man, Gianluigi Troiano, who escaped from house arrest in 2021 after removing an electronic bracelet. He was arrested Thursday in Granada, Spain, while receiving a package.

The joint operation was ordered by the Regional Anti-Mafia Office of Bari, Apulia, and carried out by the ROS Carabinieri and the Provincial Command of Foggia, Apulia. Spain’s Civil Guard and France’s national gendarmerie also cooperated in the arrest, according to a Carabinieri press release.

Raduano’s escape by tying bedclothes from a prison window less than a year ago was caught on prison surveillance cameras.

The escape took 16 seconds and he fled on foot without being seen or followed by guards, prompting an internal investigation at the maximum security prison.

Raduano was serving a 24-year sentence for drug trafficking when he escaped and was sentenced in absentia to life in prison after escaping for inciting the murder of gangster Omar Trott in a bar in Vieste, Italy, in 2017.
