Most smart TVs equipped with the Android operating system allow you to control the TV by voice. However, this function, although extremely convenient, is used quite rarely. With the advancement of speech recognition technology and AI-based services, voice assistants have made significant progress. Let’s learn together about the advanced features of the voice assistant developed by KIVI, an international brand known for its smart TVs.
Why do you need a voice assistant and why is it more convenient than regular TV control?
Try giving your TV a voice command instead of pressing the buttons on the remote for a minute until you get to the movie or program you want, and the benefits will become apparent. Both users and developers agree that the remote control is convenient for normal control of the TV, such as switching channels, adjusting the volume, turning the device on and off. It’s about what old TVs can offer. However, today’s TV is much more than a device for viewing content. Smart TVs can play music, movies in all possible formats, games, people can learn, have fun, browse the Internet and watch YouTube videos. And the voice assistant significantly simplifies the search for content – you don’t need to press the buttons on the remote control for several minutes to enter, for example, the name of the movie “The Fifth Element”. Just say “Ok, Google” or press a button on your remote and ask The Fifth Element to play.
How do you know if your Android TV has a voice assistant and how do you set it up?
KIVI’s response: Say “Ok Google” or see if there are any buttons on the remote or
. These are the buttons to call the voice assistant. If that doesn’t work, Google recommends checking for the latest OS updates. To do this, you need to go to the TV settings, select the “System update” option, and then install the latest version of the operating system or the “Assistant” program, as the system prompts. To set the assistant to respond to your voice, simply follow the instructions in the menu after calling the assistant.
Will the voice assistant understand your commands?
In most TV models, the microphone is located on the control panel. In order for the assistant to understand you well, you must speak close to the remote control, and the commands must be clear and loud.
The assistant understands quite a few languages and launches programs and functions using voice commands. The following languages are currently available: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, Polish, Turkish, and Russian.
If you give a command in a language that Google Assistant does not yet know, the functionality will be limited, but the most important function, i.e. voice-to-text translation, will be available. In other words, you can say, for example, “Movies with Tom Cruise” in Romanian, and the voice assistant will display search results on YouTube or enter this text into the search bar of a web browser or streaming platform.
Google promises that it will soon add other languages that will be fully supported by the voice assistant – a moment that both users and manufacturers of smart TVs have been waiting for. Until then, KIVI recommends setting the voice assistant to a language it understands and can speak, such as English.
How to give commands to the Google voice assistant?
Google Assistant understands all words and correctly places them in context. But for the best result, clear and short commands should be given:
- If the video you want to watch is already selected:
- Turn on Stranger Things on Netflix
- Play from the beginning
- Go back 30 seconds
- Fast forward 30 seconds
- Start the next episode
- When you want to watch something:
- What to watch from new series?
- Open Netflix
- Open YouTube
- Show all movies with Bruce Willis
- Find all Steven Spielberg movies and more.
What else can a voice assistant on a Smart TV be useful for?
It can replace the search engine. For example, if you are watching a new movie, you can ask the voice assistant with your voice: “Who is in the movie N?”, or “Who directed the movie N?”, or “What other movies are there with the director N?” and you will get an answer
Quick Google queries to get answers on your TV screen, from the simple like the weather (“What’s the temperature outside?”, “Will it rain tomorrow?”) to the more complex: currency rates, calculator, football scores, stock quotes, and more. The voice assistant allows you to check the information you see on the screen in seconds: “How tall is David Beckham?”, “What is the king’s gambit in chess?”, “What is the height of Everest?” etc.
If you do not have a smartphone at hand and you are cooking in the kitchen, you can ask the voice assistant on the TV how many minutes you need to cook a pizza or how, for example, to prepare a sauce for it. And if culinary experiments fail, Google Assistant will find and recommend the best pizzerias near your home.
The voice assistant syncs the TV with your Google account. It can remind you of important meetings, add tasks to your calendar, plan your route home and send it to your smartphone. You can communicate with the TV to control the Smart Home system – “Turn off the light in the bedroom”, “Reduce” the temperature to 18 degrees » etc. Thus, all devices running on the Android operating system and supporting Google Home in your home form a single network.
In Romania, KIVI smart TVs are available in Carrefour, Emag, Flanco.
