Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Tuesday that Hamas’ “terrorist” attack on Israel does not give Israel the right to “kill millions of innocent people,” AFP reported.

“Hamas committed a terrorist act against Israel, but that doesn’t mean Israel has to kill millions of innocent people,” Lula said during his weekly “Talk with the President” broadcast on social media.

On October 7, Israel suffered an unprecedented attack by Hamas. According to the latest figures from Israeli authorities, which identified more than 200 hostages kidnapped by Hamas, the Israeli side killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians.

In response, Israel declared war to “destroy” Hamas by mercilessly striking Gaza. More than 5,700 Palestinians, most of them civilians, including more than 2,300 children, have been killed in the relentless shelling, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health.

“Israel must stay in its territory, which was demarcated by the UN, and the Palestinians must have the right to their own territory (…) so that no one invades other people’s lands,” Lula said.

“My role is to make sure that negotiations are possible” for a ceasefire, he added.

Brazil currently chairs the UN Security Council, which reconvenes on Tuesday after two failed attempts to pass a resolution on the conflict.

“The UN is weakened (…), if it were stronger, it could play a more important role,” the Brazilian president lamented.
