The Barcelona Opera has hired a “privacy director” to make performers feel comfortable performing passionate scenes. This is the first time in Spain and a rarity in Europe, Reuters reports.

The creation of the feature comes after the #MeToo movement rocked the film industry, when major Hollywood studios were the first to turn to so-called “privacy coordinators.”

Reuters, however, reports that the world of opera has been marked by its own problems with sexual harassment allegations.

Barcelona Opera has hired Ita O’Brien as “director of privacy” to oversee its production of Antony and Cleopatra, based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The play’s premiere is scheduled for October 28 at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in the Spanish city.

O’Brien, who previously worked for HBO and Netflix in a similar role, says opera productions have always revolved around dramatic scenes, and that the performer often arrives in town just days before the premiere.

“People were made to feel uncomfortable, harassed and downright insulted without a process of seeking and obtaining consent,” she claims.

The 40-year-old Briton has a background in theater and acting, being the founder of Intimacy On Set, which provides advice to the film and TV industry.

In rehearsals, O’Brien encourages performers to “hug” and then discuss whether they feel comfortable being touched.

“We invite the performer to really tell us about their limits, and that’s a big change in the industry,” she says. “Your yes means yes, your no means no, and maybe means no,” she explains her philosophy.

Reuters reminds that the move of the opera from Barcelona takes place in the context of a high-profile scandal that broke out in Spain after the president of the country’s football federation, Luis Rubiales, kissed a player of the women’s team on the mouth without her consent.

In January, Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo became the object of new accusations of sexual harassment by a singer with whom he filmed a TV show.

The first accusations of sexual harassment against Domingo appeared 3 years ago, and they greatly affected his career.
