Papu Gomez denies doping allegations: “Terbutaline does not improve results in football”
In his defense, Gomez (35 years old) says that he used cough syrup when he was sick.
The footballer tested positive for terbutaline, a bronchodilator that he says is allowed in athletes and does not improve football performance.
“In connection with the latest news published about me in connection with a possible violation of anti-doping rules, I am informing the media and the public of the following information:
1) First of all, I confirm that yesterday I was informed of the decision of the Disciplinary Commission of the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency, which agreed to suspend my license for two years.
2) I have always not only strictly followed all the rules, but I have also been an ardent supporter of clean sport and sportsmanship, categorically condemning and rejecting any form of doping.
3) I have never had and will never have the intention to participate in prohibited activities.
4) The alleged offense related to the presence of terbutaline in my body as a result of my accidentally and unintentionally receiving a spoonful of cough syrup from my youngest son.
However, it should be noted that the therapeutic use of Terbutaline is allowed for professional athletes and does not improve football performance in any way.
5) Without going into the facts, I informed my colleagues, as I believe that the disciplinary proceedings were not conducted in accordance with the regulations.
6) Finally, I would like to thank you for all the expressions of affection and support I have received during these difficult times on a professional level” – Alejandro “Papu” Gomez.
Alejandro Gomes recently signed a contract with Monza (Serie A group). The positive test was made shortly before Gomez (then a Sevilla player) participated with Argentina in the World Cup in Qatar.
