Indian authorities are determined to keep the rhesus macaque population out of the capital’s streets by putting up giant langur monkeys (Colobinae) signs to keep the smaller primates from ravaging or grabbing attention during the G20 summit, reports say CNN.
India is preparing to welcome leaders of the Group of 20 countries to New Delhi next weekend, including US President Joe Biden, in what will be India’s most important event.
Few are left to fend for themselves, even the city’s mischievous population of rhesus macaques.
The little monkeys are all over the capital, they run through the streets, jump on the roofs, causing general chaos and occasionally attacking pedestrians.
As the government embarks on a major beautification drive, painting walls, planting trees and planting colorful flowers in key areas of the city, authorities in New Delhi have taken steps to ensure animals don’t spoil the effort.
So they came up with the idea of placing signs with langurs around key areas of the city, while the men imitated the sounds of the larger primates to scare away the macaques.
Satish Upadhyay, vice-chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council, told Indian news agency ANI that the macaques would be frightened and would not come close.
Upadhyay added that 30-40 males who can imitate the sounds of langur monkeys were recruited to fool the macaques.
