The tournament in Canada also marked the return of Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark. The 2018 Australian Open champion announced her retirement in January 2020, but changed her mind after giving birth to two children.

The former world leader, who received a wildcard, met a player who arrived from the qualifiers.

The scenario for both sets was much the same, as was the scoreline, with the Dane firmly in control of the game which ended after one hour and 38 minutes.

In the second round, Caroline Wozniacki will meet the winner of the competition, Marketa Vondrousova (10 WTA) and Mayar Sherif (33 WTA).
