President Klaus Iohannis once again praised the current ruling PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition, saying he was satisfied that it had “successfully managed” to lead Romania out of crisis and that at the moment “there is no viable alternative to this coalition”. As for the widespread scenario of early elections, Iohannis does not believe in their possibility, assessing that the rotation of the government provided for by the coalition agreement is “possible and will happen.”

Klaus Johannis made these statements on Monday at a press conference held together with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, when he was asked if he was considering an option in which PSD and PNL would not agree on some important issues and early elections would be reached.

In this context, he once again praised the current coalition and the government led by Nicolae Chuke, which managed to “avoid several crises”.

  • “I’ve been asked many times if I’m happy with the way it’s been run. Yes, I am satisfied because what the coalition and the government had to do – to bring Romania out of the crisis – they did it successfully.
  • Oh, not quite all the details are worked out, that’s again, but I don’t think anyone expected this coalition to work with only a very good understanding and only perfect solutions.
  • This is a complex political coalition between PNL and PSD, and we have to see the full side of the glass – they understood each other and solved the problems they faced.
  • The question is how to proceed, because in a few months or weeks there should be a rotation at the head of the Government. I believe that this rotation is possible and will happen.
  • I don’t think there is a viable alternative to this coalition at the moment, and the parties have understood that,” Yohannis said.

He stated that he is “convinced” that the current PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition will move forward and that there is “no reason to worry”:

  • “At the same time, it will be accompanied by additional problems (rotation of the government – no), which will have to be negotiated. As far as it is necessary, I will get involved for the normal functioning of the case.
  • Early elections are so complicated that they are not provided for in the Constitution. I will join in order to guarantee stability in the country and the normal course of public affairs.
  • After all, the elections will be held at the end of next year at the latest. I once again believe that the rotation at the head of the Government will take place and this coalition will move forward. How it will look in detail, we will see, but there is no cause for concern. I don’t want to give examples from near or far, but we will not have elections after elections. Romania will be governed and it will remain a stable country.”
