According to UNESCO estimates released today, the war in Ukraine has damaged the country’s cultural heritage and cultural sector by 2.4 billion euros and resulted in a loss of 13.9 billion euros in revenue in the entertainment, arts and tourism sectors.
According to UNESCO, whose Director General Audrey Azoulay was in Ukraine today, 248 monuments were damaged, some of which were completely destroyed, especially in the eastern part of the country.
The Russian invasion also led to the collapse of the cultural sectors of the Ukrainian economy, including “tourism, arts, sports, entertainment, cultural industries.”
“We will support the Ukrainian authorities in drawing up a national plan for the reconstruction of the cultural sector,” said Azoulay, who estimates the total funding needs for the reconstruction and restart of this sector at 6.4 billion euros.
Seven cultural monuments and one natural heritage site in Ukraine are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the historical center of Odessa, which was included in the corresponding list this year.
Another sixteen sites, including the city of Chernihiv, destroyed in the first months of the war, appear on the UNESCO “demonstrative” list.
