Russian diplomacy on Friday condemned the European Parliament’s resolution this week to recognize Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism”, while Moscow said it had “nothing to do” with the fight against terrorism, AFP reported.

“This unfriendly action is part of the West’s political information campaign against our country and has nothing to do with the real situation in the fight against international terrorism,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to recognize Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism” in the conflict in Ukraine, calling on 27 EU countries to do the same.

In the text adopted in Strasbourg by 494 votes “for” (58 “against” and 44 “abstentions”), MEPs describe “Russia as a state that sponsors terrorism and as a state that uses the means of terrorism.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi has repeatedly called on the international community to recognize the regime of President Volodymyr Putin as “terrorist”.

At this stage, the decision of the European Parliament is largely symbolic, since the EU, unlike the USA, does not have an appropriate legal framework.
