The final of the Billie Jean King Women’s Team Tennis Cup took place in Glasgow on Sunday night, with Switzerland winning the competition for the first time, beating Australia.
After losing the final of the same competition to Russia last year, Switzerland finally managed to lift the trophy after two successes achieved by the athletes who took part in the last action of the final tournament, against Australia.
In the first match, Teichmann (35 WTA) defeated Storm Sanders (237 WTA), 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in three very tight sets.
Elsewhere, Belinda Bencic (WTA No. 12) edged past Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA No. 33), 6-2, 6-1, after just one hour and 18 minutes of play, a result that sealed victory for Switzerland.
Australia have not won the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly the Federation Cup) since 1974. Australia has 7 titles.
