One of Westminster’s richest politicians, Sunak, 42, will become the country’s youngest leader in modern times – and the third in less than two months – as he takes over at one of the most tumultuous times in British political history.

He replaced Liz Truss, who lasted just 44 days before announcing her resignation.

He told his MPs in parliament on Monday that they faced an “existential crisis” and must “unite or die”. He said the country faced a “deep economic problem”.

“We need stability and unity, and uniting the party and the country will be my absolute priority,” said the politician, who will become the first Indian-origin UK prime minister.

The first prime minister appointed by King Charles III

On Tuesday, Rishi Sunak will officially become the first black Prime Minister of Great Britain after winning the leadership of the Conservative Party.

Liz Truss, who resigned as Prime Minister last Thursday, will make a speech in front of Downing Street at around 10:15 (12:15 Romanian time) before heading to Buckingham Palace to be received by King Charles III . . After that, Rishi Sunaka will be received by the king, who will instruct him to form a new government. He will go to Downing Street, where he will give a speech at around 11:35 (13:35 Romanian time).

It will also be the first prime ministerial appointment of the new sovereign, Charles III, who ascended the throne on September 8 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Rishi Sunak, the youngest British Prime Minister in the last 200 years and the first of Indian origin

Sunak was born in Southampton in 1980, but both his parents are Hindus of Indian origin who were born and lived in East Africa before emigrating. His grandparents were born in Punjab province and emigrated with their families from East Africa to England in the 1960s.

During the last premiership campaign, Sunak repeatedly said that he helped his mother with the pharmacy she ran, with all the bookkeeping and payroll.

He had a privileged education – he studied at an elite fee-paying school and is the last prime minister to study at Oxford University, after David Cameron and his predecessor Truss. Studied politics, philosophy and economics.

During his last campaign for prime minister, he backed more selective grammar schools after new ones were banned by the opposition Labor Party, but repeatedly said a “world-class education” should be a birthright.

He will also become the first black person to become Prime Minister of Great Britain. Ravi Kumar, 38, a Conservative Party member who works for a finance company in Nottingham, described his appointment as a “watershed moment”.

“I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I couldn’t imagine in my lifetime being a prime minister who wasn’t white… So to see a British Indian leader is phenomenal,” he told Reuters .

But Sunak’s marriage to the daughter of an Indian billionaire has raised concerns in his party, with many wondering if he is too far removed from the concerns of ordinary voters, some of whom are forced by inflation to decide whether to spend money on food or heating.

It didn’t help that in April, Sunak’s wife was forced to confirm reports that her non-domiciled status (a British resident with a permanent home outside the UK) meant she paid no tax on all her overseas earnings. She promised to put an end to this situation.

“Rishi has good PR but lacks the ability to be bold and be the Brexit chancellor that the UK needs,” said a Conservative Party insider on condition of anonymity.

Sunac’s supporters say he is the man Britain needs to stabilize the country financially after Truss’ plans shook financial markets by increasing government borrowing and mortgages.

“We need someone who can provide stability and proven economic competence in these difficult times and Rishi Sunak is that person,” said Grant Shapps, appointed as Britain’s home secretary after Truss sacked her predecessor.

Shapps was just one of the ministers who backed Sunak after Johnson dropped out of the race, surprising and even angering his supporters. Johnson did not make public who he endorsed.
