The French capital is declaring: this Sunday “Paris breathes without a car” for part of the day, banning the movement of motorized vehicles within the city walls to enjoy “a calmer, more alive and breathing city”, according to the city hall, which has been organizing this operation since 2015, writes AFP.
In addition to the ring road, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., “the entire city will be reserved for environmentally friendly traffic, bicycles, roller skates, scooters, skateboards, pedestrians and public transport users.”
The ban also applies to two-wheelers and electric vehicles.
Violators face a fine of 135 euros.
The only exceptions are emergency vehicles, buses and taxis with a speed limit of 20 km/h in certain areas, as well as Parisians returning from the weekend with proof of residence.
In 2021, on the day of the same operation, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide was “almost 20% lower than on a normal Sunday,” according to data from the Airparif Paris Region Air Quality Observatory.
