According to the morning assessment of the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain, the return of Kupyansk to the Ukrainian army will be a significant blow for the Russian troops, as it is a logistical supply point for the occupying forces in Donbas.

What British military intelligence says:

  • On September 6, 2022, Ukrainian troops began offensive operations in the south of the Kharkiv region. Advanced units on a narrow front advanced up to 50 km into territory previously under Russian control.
  • Probably, the Russian troops were caught by surprise. This sector was only weakly defended, and Ukrainian units captured or surrounded several towns.
  • Russian troops around Izyum are apparently increasingly isolated.
  • Ukrainian units are now threatening the city of Kupyansk; its capture would be a significant blow to Russia, as it is located on the advanced supply routes in Donbas.
  • As Ukrainian operations also continue in Kherson, the Russian defense front is under pressure on both the northern and southern flanks.

May’s assessment is consistent with the views of military experts and the latest analysis by the Institute for the Study of War, according to which the Ukrainians have recaptured about 2,500 square kilometers of territory.
