“Bell” for the increased risk of fires in the coming days – which areas does this apply to?

Unfavorable pyrometeorological conditions are expected to prevail over large parts of eastern and southern Greece from Wednesday until Friday, according to the National Observatory of Athens/Meteo.

The main reason for the deterioration of fire and meteorological conditions is the strengthening of northern winds in the Aegean Sea and on the eastern continents. In addition, these days, local forest fuel will be even more flammable due to the prolonged high temperatures and dry conditions that have prevailed in our country in the previous days.

Thus, based on the latest available forecast data analyzed by the pyrometeorological team FLAME of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA) / meteo.gr, the picture for today’s environment is as follows:

  • A very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high thermal loads is expected in Attica (including Kythira), Boeotia, Northern Evia, Corinth, Argolis, Laconia, Samothrace, Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios and Samos.
  • Locally high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Phthiotis, Ilia, Arcadia, Skyros, Rhodes and South Crete.
  • High potential for wind-driven forest fires is expected in Northern Evia, Evros, Cyclades, Ikaria, Kasos and Karpathos.

On Thursday:

  • Attica, Boeotia, K. Evia, Corinth, Argolis, Laconia, Samothrace, Lemnos, Lesbos, Chios and Samos are expected to have a very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads.
  • Locally high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Phthiotis, Ilia, Arcadia, Messinia, Skyros, Rhodes and South Crete.
  • High potential for wind-driven forest fires is expected in Northern Evia, Rhodopes, Evros, Cyclades, Kasos and Karpathos.

Production:

  • A very high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads is expected in Attica, Boeotia, K. Evia, Corinth, Argolis, Laconia, Samothrace, Lesvos and Chios.
  • Lemnos, Samos, Skyros, Rhodes and South Crete are expected to have locally high potential for wind-driven forest fires with potentially high heat loads.
  • A high potential for wind induced forest fires is expected in northern Evia, Cyclades, Kasos and Karpathos, and locally in Phthiotis, Arcadia, Messinia, Rhodopes and Evros.
  • In western Central Greece and northwestern Peloponnese, a local high potential for forest fires caused by a convective plume is expected, accompanied by a small probability of a fire cloud.

It is indicated that in the above geographic areas, special attention should be paid to areas where northerly winds will “combine” with the terrain and forest fuel (for example, with a vertical wind on the slope of a densely overgrown mountain range), maximizing the potential for extreme behavior in a fire.
