The International Olympic Committee has prepared an examination board through which all Russian and Belarusian athletes who have qualified for the 2024 Olympics will pass before receiving permission to participate in the event in Paris.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the IOC, after initially recommending a ban on international competition for athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus, allowed them to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

But they will compete as neutral individual athletes, without their flags, anthems and emblems. They will also have to go through a screening process to ensure they meet certain IOC eligibility criteria.

In order to receive permission to compete in Paris, Russian and Belarusian athletes must not actively support the war in Ukraine, writes News.ro.

In addition, they must not have contracts with any military or security agency. Many sports clubs in this country have direct links with the military and security services.

Athletes must also meet all anti-doping criteria and must sign the conditions of participation in Paris, which include commitments to respect the Olympic Charter, including the Olympic Movement’s “mission of peace.”

Only individual athletes can compete in Paris. Teams of Russia and Belarus in team sports cannot qualify.

This week, the IOC established an individual neutral athlete eligibility review panel to assess the eligibility of every athlete with a Russian or Belarusian passport who has received or may receive a qualifying spot for the Paris Olympics.

Compliance review will include all support staff of athletes participating in the Olympic Games.
