Why won’t you see more Shell gas stations? Auto Plus news in your smartphone

When you need to fill up your car, you can choose from several options: for example, you can go to mass retail gas stations or to big brands such as Total, BP, Esso or even shell. These signs are important to all French motorists, but that may well change in the latest…

Closure of 1,000 Shell gas stations

Indeed, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant owns numerous Shell service stations: according to the brand’s official website, there are more than 40 thousand worldwide, including more than 26,000 points of sale in Europe as well 2500 service stations in France.
But this observation is likely to change in the coming years: Shell actually wants to sell 500 service stations from this year 2024, as well as 500 points of sale during 2025. In general, it will be 1,000 Shell service stations that will disappear world until the end of 2025or about 2% of the brand’s retail outlets.
The reason for this change is energy transition Shell, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions: to do so, Shell will focus more on the production of premium motor oils and lubricants, as well as to develop its network of charging stations for electric carsto the detriment of traditional fuel at service stations.

200,000 charging points by 2030

In our regions, although access to service stations in rural areas is increasingly difficult, this announcement is not necessarily perceived as good news.
But the market for electric cars is booming, and that’s why Shell wants to bet big on it: globally, Shell currently has more than 54,000 public charging pointsinstalled at gas stations, mobility centers, on the street, as well as in places such as supermarkets.
It is this activity that Shell wants to massively develop: in fact, the company plans to expand its network of electric charging stations around the world, which should reach close to 200,000 charging points by 2030.
A few months ago, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant inaugurated its largest EV charging station in the world: located in Shenzhen, China, it has no less than 258 fast charging points capable of charging more than 3,300 EVs per day.

Back in China, Shell is also developing “superstations” such as the Panlong station in Wuhan, which offers more than ten types of products and services: gasoline, diesel, hydrogen, electric car charging, car wash, mini market, restaurant, living room…
