Sorana Kirstya will play on Friday in the second round of the WTA Rome against Jelena Ostapenko, the winner of the Grand Slam (at Roland Garros, 2017, after the final with Simona Halep).

The match between Sorana and Yelena (20th favorite) will be the third of the day at the Grand Stand Arena (could start around 15:00). The day of tennis at this stadium will start at 12:00 (Romanian time).

Before the match between Kirstya and Ostapenko, there will be matches between Felix Auger-Aliassime against Oleksii Popyrin and Stan Wawrinka against Grigor Dimitrov.

  • Sorana and Yelena met twice at the WTA tournament, and each time the Latvian won. Both matches took place in 2017: 6-4, 6-4 Ostapenko at the US Open, and 6-4, 6-4 in Beijing in the quarters.

Thursday was one of the big surprises at the Foro Italico: Aryna Sabalenko (second favorite) and Jessica Pegula (third favorite) were eliminated early in the second round of the WTA 1000 competition.

WTA Rome takes place from May 9 to 20 on the clay in the Foro Italico complex. His total prize money is $3,572,618 and is in the “WTA 1000” category. Iga Svyatek became the champion of the last two competitions. In Romania, the matches of the women’s table can be watched live on Digisport.

  • The Italian competition, founded in 1930, has been won three times by a Romanian athlete: Ilie Nestase, 1970 and 1973 editions, and Simona Halep, 2020.
  • They have also been in the finals: Ilie Nestase (1974, losing to Bjorn Borg), Virginia Ruzici (1978, 1980, 1981) and Simona Halep (2017, 2018, losing both times to Elina Svitolina).
