Bianca Andreescu, left without a coach after Sven Groeneveld left her, will work with the technician who trained her in the past in 2023.
Christophe Lambert, the new coach of Bianca Andreescu
Andreescu, currently ranked 45th in the WTA rankings, will be coached by Christophe Lambert. To work with the former Grand Slam winner, he stepped down as New Zealand Tennis Federation’s director of high performance.
Lambert also worked with Andreescu in 2016 when he was with the Canadian federation. He said that he maintains contact with an athlete of Romanian origin.
“Bianca asked me to teach her, and I agreed to the job. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse. We didn’t talk every week or every month. It’s always good for people to call you when you’re awake, but when she was asleep I’d check on her and tell her what I was thinking” – Christopher Lambert for sport.co.nz.
Bianca Andreescu wants to return to the WTA Top 10
In recent years, the US Open 2019 champion had major problems with injuries, and in 2020 she did not play a single official match. This year, Bianca Andreescu won 19 matches and lost 12, and the most important performance was the final in Bad Homburg, lost to Carolina Garcia (7-6, 4-6, 4-6).
“The last few weeks I have felt very good both physically and mentally. My tennis is outstanding again, but I want to take it one step at a time without setting my expectations too high.
I’m going to have a great pre-season, which I haven’t been able to do in previous years, so I feel like 2023 is going to be a great year for me. I see myself in the top 10 again.” – said Bianca Andreescutwo weeks ago in the Billie Jean King Cup.
Lambert has also worked with the Chinese Davis Cup team as well as the British Federation.
