BMW has announced that alongside its car plant in Debrecen, Hungary, it will also build a battery plant for electric vehicles with a total investment of €2 billion. Both units will be produced from 2025.
At the car plant, construction began six months ago, and a total of 500 more people will be employed than was initially announced. In total, BMW promises to invest two billion euros in the unit in the city, located near the border with Romania.
In July 2018, BMW announced the opening of a car plant in Debrecen, investing one billion euros. Construction was supposed to start in 2019, and the annual production volume will reach 150,000 cars. Construction started much later than expected, mainly due to the pandemic.
This will be the first European plant that BMW has opened since 2000. BMW’s German rivals Audi and Mercedes also produce cars in Hungary.
