Perez: “Football is losing its status as the world’s top sport”

Florentino Perez sounded the alarm for the future of football. The President of Real Madrid spoke at the general meeting of the club and called European football “sick”, saying that changes are needed so that young people do not turn away from him.

Perez was one of the pioneers in the creation of the European Super League. The venture lasted just 48 hours in April 2021 after a big backlash.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Milan, Inter and Atlético Madrid dropped out of the squad. However, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remained.

“Our favorite sport is sick, especially in Europe and of course in Spain,” Perez said. “Football is losing its place as the world’s premier sport. The biggest concern is that young people are less and less interested in football. The current competitions in the form in which they are developed today do not arouse the interest of the audience, with the exception of the final stages, ”added the Spanish agent.

The Superleague is suing FIFA and UEFA. “The Super League is still in the midst of European legal proceedings challenging UEFA’s monopoly on European football,” Perez said.

The President of Real Madrid stressed that the best football teams play each other only a few times. “If you look at the last Champions League finalists, Liverpool, a historic team with six European Cups, it turns out that we have met with them only nine times in 67 years,” commented the Spanish agent.
