In the name of Maria Sakkari (No. 3) we hear one of the biggest negative surprises of the 2nd round of the American Open. Our champion lost to 21-year-old Chinese Chiu Wang (No. 75) 6-3, 5-7, 5-7 and dropped out of the tournament.

The good start did not last for the Greek tennis player, who was leading 6-3 and showing that she would easily advance to the 3rd round. The sequel was very different. She had many ups and downs in her performance, making mistakes in decisive moments and giving her opponent a chance for a big win, as well as reaching the 3rd round of the US Open.

Maria Sakkari reached the semi-finals of the tournament last year and her 2nd round loss is expected to cost her at least two places in the world rankings.

Emma Radukanou, last year’s tournament winner, was defeated by Alize Cornet 3-6, 3-6 and was eliminated from the continuation of the Grand Slam tournament. Naomi Osaka, a two-time tournament winner, was also stopped in the first round. She lost to Danielle Collins 6-7, 3-6. Victoria Azarenka beat Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and 2020 Australian Open winner Sophine Kenin (6-7, 4-6 from Julie Niemeyer) was also eliminated.
