
Philipp Lahm is boycotting the World Cup in Qatar. The former defender of the German national team said in an interview with Kicker that he would not go to the tournament, citing the lack of respect for human rights in the country.
“I’m not on a mission and I don’t want to go there. I prefer to watch the tournament from home. Human rights should play a more important role in awarding the winners of the tournament,” said Philip Lam.
The former Bayern Munich defender is the president of the organizing committee for Euro 2024, which will be held in Germany. He claimed that he could have made the trip if it had been necessary in connection with the performance of his duties. “If I had to make a mandatory trip as head of Euro 2024, things would be different,” he stressed.
Philipp Lahm is considered one of the best cornerbacks of his era. He hung up his boots in 2017 without getting a red card.
He made 113 appearances for the German national team. He was the captain of the team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
