Laura Kodrutsa Kovesi claims that President Klaus Iohannis asked her to resign as head of DNA before signing the recall decree under the CCR decision.
“Yes, that’s something we haven’t made public. It was a discussion between us. I didn’t think I needed to make this public. He asked me to resign. I refused,” Kovesi said in an interview with G4Media. ANDThe head of the European Prosecutor’s Office says that he had “no reason” to resign.
“My role is not to help presidents go through delicate moments when they have to explain their own decisions. I did not consider myself guilty of anything. I was waiting… at the end of my term, if I am recalled, someone will at least thank me for what I did, and not demand my resignation,” she added.
In 2019, when asked if he had a discussion with Kovesi in which he asked her to resign before signing the decree dismissing the head of DNA, President Klaus Iohannis replied: “I can confirm that we had several discussions, the last one a few weeks ago , when I congratulated her on the position of chief prosecutor of Europe. The rest are discussions that are not made public. But it was a difficult moment when I signed the decree, I followed the decision made, unfortunately, by the Constitutional Court, and it was a moment that Romania did not need.”
When asked if this was the reason why he did not personally announce his resignation, Klaus Iohannis replied: “I did it wisely.”
Laura Codruca Kovesi was dismissed from the post of DNA chairman on July 9, 2018. This decision was announced by the president’s spokesman at the time.
