The AUR protest, organized on Sunday in University Square, follows a series of scandals strategically provoked by George Simion in Parliament and in Victory Square. Although he invited Romanians to the streets for a peaceful protest, everything the AUR leader did during the week raised tensions.

According to AUR, the rally will start at 14:00 on University Square, and the demonstrators will arrive around 16:00 on Victory Square, in front of the government headquarters.

Following the pattern of the Czech anti-government protest in Prague, George Simion announced in early September that the AUR was calling on Romanians to take to the streets to protest energy bills.

Later at a press conference, George Simion said he did not want to politicize Sunday’s rally “one way or another,” urging participants not to be provoked and to distance themselves when there are “signs of violence.”

  • George Simion: “Many diaspora Romanians will come to Sunday’s non-party rally, it’s not an AUR rally. I want to appeal to all our members and sympathizers not to come with party signs, not to come with the AUR logo. Six more non-parliamentary political formations will participate with us, as well as non-governmental organizations and trade unions and employers and members of some trade unions and employers (… ) Our duty as the opposition is to be in the streets with Romanians, but we do not want to politicize this movement.”

As for the organization, at the beginning of the week several unsolicited posters announcing the protest were put up in Bucharest.

Also, postcards with invitations to the event organized in the University Square at the exact time and place announced by AUR were inserted into the mailboxes of the citizens of Bucharest.

Simion and the AUR deputies are a scandal and a circus in the parliament

On the other hand, politically, George Simion did everything possible to attract attention and make a scandal both in the parliament and in front of the government in Victory Square.

On Tuesday, in the Chamber of Deputies, George Simion, accompanied by AUR parliamentarians, boycotted the meeting of the Commission on Labor Issues, where salary increases for local elected officials were discussed. Simion broadcast live on Facebook how he “fights” with parliamentarians of the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition to block the increase in salaries of local elected officials (although in the Senate, AUR voted side by side with Putera for a bill that increased the salaries of dignitaries).

Simion apostrophized the parliamentarians, turned off their lights and was on the verge of a fight with PSD MP Gabriel Zetea.

On Thursday, at a press conference, George Simion announced that he had received threats from the leader of the PSD deputies and a journalist about attacks on him and the protesters on the street.

“I received threats from the leader of the PSD deputies (Alfred Simonis) and from a PSD-affiliated journalist hired by Mr. Pandele from Voluntari that there would be attacks on me, on the protesters in the street. I invite Romanians to a peaceful protest, and I urge them not to give in to provocations, one way or another, there are government forces that do not want this protest to be peaceful and do not want this protest to be massive,” said the UPR leader, reports Agency Agerpres.

The Midnight Scandal Between George Simion and the Police. The AUR leader was elected only with a fine

A few hours later, after the press conference, the leader of the Ukrainian SSR takes part in a new scandal, this time in Piața Victoriei., in front of the Government at 03:00 at night. In a new live broadcast on Facebook, Simion announced to his supporters that he is starting earlier than the rally scheduled for Sunday.

During the broadcast on the page in the social network, the politician entered into a conflict with representatives of the gendarmerie and the police over a carriage with the party’s logo, which was parked on Victory Square. The gendarmes informed the leader of the AUR that they had received a request in which they were accused of using sound equipment at a late hour.

Simion was fined 1,350 lei by the traffic police and taken to the traffic police office for driving with a suspended license. The police also gave him a drug test, which came back negative. The leader of the AUR decided to have a criminal record for allegedly driving with a suspended license.

A brief summary of the “manifesto protests” organized by Simion

In early February, George Simion announced a “mega-protest” similar to the Canadian one, with trucks, tractors and cars. Simion urged even farmers to “go outside with sheep, goats… because they too have problems.”

On February 27, about 1,000 people took part in the AUR rally, which started at the University Square and ended near the Kotrocen Palace after the gendarmes blocked the demonstrators. During the protest, George Simion had several incidents with the gendarmes, with whom he argued, because they did not allow the rickshaw that opened the column of demonstrators to drive up.

On June 18, Giorgi Simion tried to cause a diplomatic scandal by trying to enter the Republic of Moldova, although he is banned from entering until 2023.

The leader of AUR tried to cross the border as a deputy and take part together with other Romanian parliamentarians in a joint session with the Moldovan parliament. Simion tried to enter with a diplomatic passport, although he knew that he was prohibited from entering the Republic of Moldova until 2023.

On August 27, AUR President George Simion marries Ilinka Muntianu, an event hailed as the political marketing experiment of the year. Simion organizes a village party modeled after Zelea Codrianu, where more than 10,000 Romanians are expected. Ahead of the event, the AUR leader has been heavily publicizing his wedding preparations on Facebook, from photos of his wedding rings to videos of him shopping local vendors for the party.

No more than 5,000 people gathered for the announced party, but the wedding attracted attention and caused a reaction, being heavily advertised on Romanian television.
