PSD President Marcel Čolaku said on Monday that the Social Democrats’ future candidate in the presidential election would be elected by the cells, and that he would also accept a person from outside the party for the position.
“At the level of the SDP and the president of the SDP, these discussions did not begin (as for the party’s candidate for the presidential elections – no). The only discussion we had was very clear – the future PSD candidate will be elected by every organization, every community councillor, municipal councillor, vice mayor, mayor at electoral conferences across the country. We are completely changing the system of appointing a candidate for the post of President of Romania,” said Čolaku.
He added that there is already a “working group” for making changes to the party charter, which is dealing with these changes.
“From my point of view, I would also accept non-party candidates so that the competition is as open as possible,” he said.
Marcel Cholaku noted that the PSD will hold another congress at which changes to the charter will be approved.
