The 36-year-old actress was ordered to pay $10 million to the Pirates of the Caribbean star, who will have to pay her $2 million according to a June 1 ruling in Washington, D.C., according to news reports. ro.

Attorneys for Amber Heard, who failed to have the negligence lawsuit dismissed, filed their intent to appeal the merits on Thursday.

“We believe the court made errors that prevented it from reaching a verdict that was fair and respectful of the First Amendment” to the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, its spokespeople explained in a press release.

“We understand this call will inflame Twitter, but this is a necessary step to ensure justice,” they added.

The case of Depp v. Heard received wide publicity

The legal battle between the ex-spouses began over an article published by the Washington Post in 2018 in which Amber Heard described herself as a “public figure who represents domestic violence” without naming her ex-husband.

Assuring that this text destroyed his reputation and career, 59-year-old Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation and demanded $50 million in compensation.

Amber Heard fought back and demanded a double. After a six-week trial, a jury in a Fairfax court concluded that the former couple had defamed each other, but found that the damages suffered by Johnny Depp were greater.

The trial, which was widely publicized and broadcast live on television, was watched by millions of viewers around the world and caused an explosion of abusive messages against the actress on social networks.

The two actors started dating in 2011 and got married in 2015. Amber Heard filed for divorce in 2016, claiming she was a victim of domestic violence, something Johnny Depp has always denied.

She dropped those allegations when the divorce was finalized in 2017.
