You’ll no longer hear snippets of songs by artists like Taylor Swift, Bob Dylan or Justin Bieber on TikTok after Universal Music decided to remove songs from the artists they represent. TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) have been in talks, but no new licensing agreement has been reached.
TikTok videos that contain snippets of Universal Music-licensed songs will be automatically disabled, and those who posted them will be able to choose a different soundtrack.
UMG owns the copyright to the music of such groups and artists as The Beatles, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Adele, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, SZA, BTS, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Camilla Cabello, the Weeknd,
Talks between Universal Music and TikTok have been going on for months, but Universal says it’s not happy with what TikTok is offering for the audio content it uses.
TikTok has more than a billion users and has become a force in the music industry thanks to its ability to turn ordinary people into stars if their videos go viral and garner millions of views.
TikTok has repeatedly said that it helps artists grow their audience and is also a way to discover talent. The fact that it has a much younger audience than Facebook is important.
On the other hand, big music companies say that TikTok makes a lot of money but doesn’t pay enough for licensed content. The ByteDance group, of which TikTok is a part, had a $110 billion business last year, while TikTok accounted for just 1% of Universal Music’s total revenue, UMG officials said.
Universal Music Group (UMG) has accused TikTok of trying to ridicule and intimidate them into agreeing to a deal that costs far less than what other music companies pay for access to its huge catalog of songs. TikTok responded that UMG was presenting a false version of the situation.
