The energy complex Valea Jiului will receive an amount of 349.954 million lei between December 2023 and June 30, 2024 as part of the state aid for mine safety and closure. The corresponding decision was made by an emergency order adopted at today’s meeting of the Government.

The money is intended for the consolidation of 13 tunnels, slaughterhouses and other types of mining operations that have been abandoned for the past 34 years.

We are talking about equipment that was in a state of deep wear and tear, and that made it impossible to defuse the coal in the deposit, as well as to continue storage activities.

According to the press release of the Ministry of Energy, in the absence of the adoption of an emergency order, the company would no longer be able to manage the functional assets provided through the payment, as well as pay more than 2,000 employees in the mining industry, which also affects the balance in the National Energy System regarding the duration of the winter and, implicitly , on Romania’s energy security.

The funding goals are as follows:

  • Gradual reduction of power generation capacity from coal, taking into account the safe and stable operation of the national electric power system;
  • Gradual and safe decommissioning of coal-fired power generation facilities;
  • Closure and preservation of coal mining for mining operations to be included in the closure program;
  • Ensuring balance in the national energy system, guaranteeing the national energy balance and avoiding social and economic crises in the Jiului Valley.

The Ministry of Energy also states that this state aid is one of the most stringent provided by the Government of Romania, clearly stipulating the types of activities to be financed and cost settlement, as well as a mechanism for independent technical and financial audit.

In September, the ministry announced that 2,000 miners in Vala Žiului will come under the management of the newly created energy complex, which will receive more than 400 million lei from the state budget.
