Meta launches social network Threads in the EU, which launched in July in the US and most of the world, but failed to launch in the EU due to regulatory and data management issues. Threads is a competitor to X (formerly Twitter).

The EU has 450 million inhabitants, and Meta hopes that the network will grow as quickly as possible. In October, Threads reached 100 million users worldwide. Mark Zuckerberg has said he wants Threads to reach billions of users in the coming years, and the EU launch is an important step.

Meta executives hope that a large number of users will be less active on X (the network that has had a tumultuous year under Musk) and switch to Threads, which they promote as a friendlier and more controversial network.

Threads is based on an Instagram account from which you can create a profile, but initially users will be able to browse without a profile on Threads.

Meta decided to wait before offering Threads to residents of the European Union until there was enough time to clarify the implications of the new Digital Markets Regulation (DMA), which came into force at the beginning of May.

The DMA aims to introduce special rules for key internet companies such as Meta to prevent anti-competitive activities.
