AGIFER decided to open an investigation into the broken pantograph the other day on a train traveling to Val Prahov, an accident that injured several people, writes Railway Club. CFR Călători recently had several problems with pantographs due to the age of the locomotives and poor maintenance.
The incident happened on Monday, December 4, 2023.
According to AGIFER’s press release, the opening of the investigation comes “as a result of the approval of the Inspector General for Road Safety at CNCF “CFR” SA”.
“The Romanian Railway Investigation Agency – AGIFER became aware of an incident that occurred on 04.12.2023, around 06:45, in the area of operation of the Bucharest Regional Railway Branch, Ploiesti – Brasov (double electrified line), in the city of the CFR Azuga station, during traffic of Interregio passenger train No. 1742 (owned by rail operator SNTFC “CFR Călători” SA), breaking the active pantograph of locomotive EA 583 towing the train, which broke a window when it fell from the first carriage of the train and injured three people who were subsequently taken to hospital “, the message says.
As a result of the accident, three women, passengers of the IR 1742 train, received injuries and were taken to the hospital in Sinaia. They were hit by shrapnel from the broken window of the carriage. The young women who came to the hospital were between 18 and 20 years old.
The breakdown of the pantograph in Azuz was by no means an isolated event. Three more similar incidents took place last weekend, Club Feroviar wrote.
A tree that fell on a locomotive in the Ilva Mică area destroyed both pantographs, high-voltage busbars and other equipment located on the roof on Saturday evening. The train stood still for five hours, until it was managed to push through with a diesel engine.
Last Sunday another train had problems with the pantograph, this time it was a malfunction. Train 3086 on the route Cluj-Napoca – Medias recorded one of the two pantographs sticking to the contact wire. The intervention of the dragster was necessary so that the locomotive could switch to power from another pantograph.
The third train to experience problems due to a locomotive pantograph failure was R4306. A pantograph broke down at Apahida and the train arrived at its destination 45 minutes late.
