According to Elon Musk, the social network X, formerly Twitter, has fired a significant number of employees responsible for fighting disinformation during the election, but the chief executive of the platform assured that the topic has not been left, reports AFP.

President X was responding to an article on The Information website that said the group had parted ways with half of the content moderation team that was spreading false information about the campaign and the US election, including its leader.

“You mean the election integrity team that is damaging the integrity of the election? Yes, I’m not there anymore,” confirmed Musk in a message published on the social network.

Since taking control of Twitter, renamed X, he has been regularly accused of significantly reducing moderation of content that contains misinformation, hate or harassment, largely due to staff cuts.

In a public interview at the Code conference south of Los Angeles, X CEO Linda Jaccarino on Wednesday did not deny that some team members had been let go, but assured the audience that it would not be fired.

“This is a matter we take very seriously and, contrary to comments that have been made, a strong and growing X team is committed to election integrity” and combating disinformation, the CEO said.

Since the end of August, the biggest players in the technology sector are subject to the increased obligations of the European Union to fight against illegal content.

According to a report released Tuesday by the Center for Transparency, X ranks first among major platforms in the ratio of misinformation messages to all content published.

European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova drew attention to these results and warned X on Tuesday.

“The law establishes obligations,” she said. “So my message to Twitter/X is this: You have to comply. We will follow you.”

The new European text provides that in case of serious and repeated violations, the company’s activities may be temporarily suspended in the European Union.
