BMW made one of the most important announcements in the brand’s recent history in Munich that it will launch six electric models under the name Neue Klasse within 24 months. There will be sedans as well as SUVs, and the first of these will be produced at the plant in Debrecen, Hungary.

At the mobility show in Munich, the brand also presented a concept called Vision Neue Klasse, which offers some ideas on how the Bavarian brand’s electric car design will evolve.

Oliver Zipse, head of BMW, announced that the Neue Klasse will consist of the launch of six new electric models over a 24-month period. The first will be produced in Debrecen, Hungary, but later plants will appear in Germany, Mexico and China.

“From sedans to SUVs, we have something for every customer,” says Zipes. The first model will be a 100% electric sedan with dimensions close to the 3 Series, a competitor to models such as the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

“30% more autonomy, 30% faster charging, 25% more efficiency – the Neue Klasse represents a major technological leap that will take EfficientDynamics to a new level. The same goes for its design – which couldn’t be more futuristic,” says BMW board member Frank Weber.

“The design of the Neue Klasse is characteristic of BMW and is so progressive that it seems as if we have skipped a model generation,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of Design at BMW, explaining that something like this is needed as more and more players enter the market in the segment electrical engineering.

BMW is also working on improving the efficiency of batteries so that production costs can even be cut in half.

BMW first announced the Neue Klasse strategy in 2021 and now says it is a “clear vision for the future of the BMW brand: electric, digital and circular.”

BMW has lower sales of electric cars in Europe than Tesla and Volkswagen, and it wants to increase them significantly through Neue Klasse, a brand used in the 60s.

What the company says about the design:

“The Vision Vehicle embodies a clear design language with large surfaces and a clear set of character lines that have been reduced to the bare essentials. This approach emphasizes iconic elements such as the BMW grille and the Hofmeister curve in the side window graphics, making the brand’s design even more recognizable.”
