Threads, a new social network, hit 30 million accounts on Thursday, less than a day after it was launched by US giant Meta to compete with Twitter, although the service is not available in the European Union due to non-compliance with data collection rules. writes AFP.

The app, which launched at 11pm GMT on Wednesday in 100 countries and is currently ad-free, is the biggest challenge for Elon Musk’s Twitter, which is already weakened by a series of outages.

“Let’s get started. Welcome to Threads,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Threads account at launch.

“Wow, 30 million accounts created,” he announced after 15:00 GMT on Thursday. “This seems like the start of something amazing, but we still have a lot of work to do to build the app.”

He previously mocked rival Elon Musk: “It’s going to take some time, but I think there should be a chat app that has at least a billion people. Twitter had a chance to do this, but failed. We hope to get there.”

Several celebrities, such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Hugh Jackman, have already opened Threads accounts, as well as Netflix and the Washington Post, Reuters and The Economist.

“A chat app written by Instagram.” This is the Apple Store description of Threads.

“We hope (Threads) can be an open and welcoming platform for discussion,” wrote Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. “If you want it, the best way is to be kind.”
