Tesla is “seriously” considering setting up a manufacturing base in India, Rajiv Chandrasekhar, deputy technology minister, said on Friday, a day after meeting with top executives of the American electric car maker.

Tesla chief Elon Musk led discussions with officials in India this week, including discussions on subsidies for the battery and electric vehicle division, Reuters reported on Thursday, Agerpres reported. .

“They are serious about choosing India as a manufacturing and innovation base. We discussed the successful collaboration between Tesla and the Indian government,” Rajiv Chandrasekhar explained on Friday in the first public comment from an Indian official on the discussions.

Reuters reports that Tesla has proposed setting up an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in India and is also considering battery manufacturing.

Asked if the discussions with Tesla included topics other than electric cars, Chandrasekhar said, “We didn’t just discuss cars.” “We discussed electric cars, energy and production technologies. All these topics were included in the conversation. It is not my competence to release information related to what they want to do in India,” the Indian official added.

Tesla representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

The talks in India represent a change in Tesla’s policy.

Outside the United States, Tesla has a factory in Shanghai – its largest in the world – and one in Brandenburg, Germany.
